What’s underneath the fastest resettable motion in animals
I was not a co-author of this study but as a Strumigenys enthusiast and aspiring 3D modeller, I was happy enough to contribute the cover image to the PLOS Biology where my colleagues have published (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pbio.3001031).
The image uses volume rendering techniques to highlight both the mandible closer muscle as well as the labral muscle that would initiate this ant’s trap-jaw mechanism.
Simultaneously, I attempted to show as much of the head as possible to convey the unique morphologies we find in this group of ants.
